Watch Strap Sizes Explained: How to Get the Right Fit

The most common reason a replacement strap does not fit is that people order by watch brand instead of by size. Straps do not work that way. Here is the thirty-second version.

Lug width is the only number that matters

The lug width is the gap where the strap meets the watch body — the distance between the two lugs the pin sits across. It is measured in millimetres and it is the only measurement that determines whether a strap fits.

Most smart watches use 20mm or 22mm. Larger sports and "ultra" style watches often use 22mm; slimmer watches use 20mm.

How to measure it

Take the existing strap off and measure the gap with a ruler, at the point where the strap was seated. Millimetres, not centimetres — you are looking for a number around 20, not 2.

What lug width is not

It is not the width of the strap in the middle — many straps taper, so the middle is narrower than the end. It is not the case size in the product name either. A watch advertised as "45mm" refers to the case diameter and tells you nothing directly about lug width.

Strap length and wrist size

Lug width decides whether a strap attaches. Length decides whether it fits your wrist. Most straps come in a standard length that fits wrists from roughly 14 to 21cm, with adjustment holes or a magnetic clasp. If your wrist is outside that, look for straps sold as long or extended.

Which material for which use

Silicone — sweat-proof, washable, comfortable for hours. The gym and summer default.

Milanese and metal — dresses a watch up for work or a wedding. Magnetic adjustment means no fixed holes to fight with, so the fit is exact.

Leather — smart enough for the office, comfortable enough all day. Avoid for workouts; sweat ruins leather.

Nylon and woven — lightest option and the most breathable in humid weather.

Fitting a new strap

Most straps use a quick-release spring bar — a small lever on the underside of the pin. Slide it across, the strap comes free, no tools needed. Older watches may need a spring bar tool, which costs very little.

Work over a table or cloth. Spring bars are small and they bounce.
